Rec Report: Back to School Fun & Tips

We can’t believe school starts back this month! Where did Summer vacation go? But don’t worry, we’ve got a few last minute hurrahs, as well as tips for getting back into school mode, before the kids have to crack open the textbooks.

It’s been a crazy past couple weeks between work, holidays and all those camps your little one(s) signed up for. And if you’re anything like us, you’re wondering how you can make the last few weeks fun before things go back to their normal routine. But what can you do that won’t break the bank? Luckily, we’ve got a few things up our sleeve!

The best place to start is the RiverStage. Thanks to Coca-Cola and our other City Partners these events are free, so you and the kiddos can rock out every Friday night at the Summer Concert Series at no cost! Friday, July 14th, Mood Ring Engagement with special guests Lefty & the Lunatics and the Electric Garden take the stage. Then, on Friday, July 21st, introduce the kids to some classic songs thanks to Sounds of Summer: a Beach Boys Tribute and The Rigbys (the Beatles Tribute).

Not sure music is the way to your child’s heart? Come on Saturdays for our Twilight Cinemas! July 15th, swim on over to the RiverStage to see “Finding Dory,” and visit on July 22nd to giggle away as you watch “The Lego Batman Movie”! We kick the party off early at 7:00 with inflatables, music and other festivities before showing the feature film at 8:30 p.m. Again, these events are no cost to you!

Now, you don’t want the kids to have a schedule shock come the end of the month. That’s why we recommend starting their nightly routine at least one week ahead of time. While you may have been more lenient on the sleep cycle up until now, it’s important to be strict about bedtime. Be sure to start the day off earlier as well!

If your students aren’t normally breakfast oriented, reinforce the fact that there’s no open fridge at school. Even if it’s just a yogurt cup or a banana, make sure they have something with them before they walk out the door. Together, these routines will help your family get back into the swing of things for the new school year.

But if you’re worried they won’t be able to sleep the night before, plan to spend the day at the Jeffersonville Aquatic Center! We’re celebrating Christmas in July on the 25th! You can get in one last day in the sun, hang out with Santa, and make sure the kids are worn out before bed. They get the memories, and you get the reassurance that they’re hitting the hay without a struggle. Also, be sure to make going back a treat by taking the kids to River Pops that first school weekend! You’re entire family is sure to enjoy a night under the stars as “Beauty and the Beast” the Broadway Musical takes the RiverStage!

So between the pool, the stage and the lightning bugs, there’s plenty of time to still make summer memories!
