History
Kyle Vissing Park, formerly Sylvan Park, was created when Oak Park was developed over 60 years ago. Bill Vissing, cousin to Kyle Vissing, was one of the original developers of the area.
In 2006, at the age of 18, Kyle was killed when a vehicle that he was a passenger in, hit a tree in the park at a high rate of speed. Later that same year Kevin Vissing, Kyle’s father decided to spear head a renovation of the property that over the years had fallen into disarray. His Father felt that since Kyle was an Eagle Scout, the park could be used for other scouts to earn the same prestigious honor.
The renovation included digging out of the pond, which acts as a retention basin for the area. The pond was filled with fish and a bridge was built over it as an Eagle Scout project by Jake Hannon from Troop 89. The City of Jeffersonville also added a new playground and improved the existing basketball court.
Due to the hard work of the Vissing family and the Jeffersonville Parks Department, the Oak Park neighborhood has another park that it can be proud of, which is evident by the heavy use that the land receives.
